My last post was on books I’ve read recently, this one is on books I’m currently reading. It’s a mix of all sorts… :p and yes, it’s mostly non fiction, but I do read fiction as well.
The Parables of Jesus Vol. 1 (Revised)
by Neil R. Lightfoot. I read this in college for a class, but with our Sunday School lessons going through the Life of Christ I picked this one to read as a refresher on the parables. It’s been encouraging. One recent note I found was on the Parable of the two debtors, the context of the story is in Simon’s home with the woman who washed Jesus’ feet. The high point of Jesus’ life is that he always received sinners. What a precious promise.
by Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird. I love this book. The authors have a great blog with great content along with YouTube videos sharing more. It’s current to today’s women on Biblical Femininity. I can’t say enough about this book… you may find several posts coming from this book.
A Novel Idea
by a whole bunch of Authors such as Jerry B. Jenkins, Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury and many more… This book is a collection of advice for budding authors. I’m enjoying it tremendously.
by Roy Peter Clark. A collection of writing strategies with practical suggestions on improving writing.
Shadow of the Almighty
by Elisabeth Elliot. This includes diaries and letters of Jim Elliot in a biography of his life. It’s good, but I preferred the Through Gates of Splendor book (story of the five missionaries martyred in Ecuador) better. Jim was a radical, and not always clear in his thinking. The more I read the more I realize that I prefer Nathaniel Saint’s life to Jim’s. Please don’t get me wrong, it is a good book. Just he was not perfect and there are things that I don’t agree with in his theology.
Ascent to the Tribes
by Isobel Kuhn. This book tells of establishing missions in the hills of Thailand and is creative and convicting. I’m awed by her commitment to ministry and enjoy her writing, but I do only read a bit at a time.
by Goerky Smith. A young adult book with danger, sailing, research, adventure and much more. I’m not far enough along to know where the plot is going, but I enjoy most BJU Press- Journey Books so we’ll see how it turns out.
